By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the role and responsibilities of a supervisor/line manager, including the link between supervisory practice, team performance, and organisational objectives.

  • Describe key supervisory leadership approaches (e.g., directive, coaching, supportive) and explain when each style is appropriate.

  • Apply effective workplace communication techniques to give instructions, set expectations, and manage day-to-day interactions with team members.

  • Demonstrate the use of delegation and task allocation methods to distribute work fairly, match responsibilities to capability, and support productivity.

  • Use structured feedback and coaching tools (e.g., SBI, GROW, SMART objectives) to support performance improvement and employee development.

  • Analyse workplace performance or behavioural issues and propose appropriate supervisory interventions, including documentation and follow-up actions.

  • Evaluate workplace conflict situations and recommend practical solutions using negotiation, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making techniques.
This course will be delivered online. The trainers will deliver each lesson on screen via zoom or similar platform, and students can follow the trainer presenting live, whilst also using a PowerPoint presentation and other resources as necessary.

Students will be able to interact with the trainer through live discussions, and also by sending questions or comments through the same platform.

All lessons will be recorded and uploaded on the student learning platform for revision during home study. The lessons are interactive and students will be encouraged to participate and also asked questions to ensure they reach the intended learning outcomes.

Short breaks will be given during each lesson.

Duration

This part-time accredited course is made up of 4 evening sessions which are spread over a period of 4 weeks.

Lesson 1: The Modern Supervisor

This lesson explores the role and responsibilities of a supervisor, including accountability, professional conduct, and the link between supervision and organisational performance. It introduces leadership styles and builds the foundation for confident, ethical supervision.

Lesson 2: Communication & Delegation

This lesson focuses on effective workplace communication, setting clear expectations, and delegating tasks appropriately. It develops the practical skills needed to organise daily operations and maintain clarity within a team.

Lesson 3: Managing Performance

This lesson develops structured performance management skills, including setting SMART objectives, monitoring KPIs, giving feedback using recognised models, and managing underperformance professionally.

Lesson 4: Problem-Solving & Conflict Management

This lesson strengthens analytical and decision-making skills by addressing workplace challenges, identifying root causes of issues, and applying conflict resolution techniques to maintain standards and team effectiveness.

Entry Requirements:


Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  • An MQF Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) and/or completion of compulsory secondary education;OR
  • A relevant school leaving certificate or vocational qualification equivalent to MQF Level 3; OR

Mature entry route: applicants who do not hold the above qualifications but can demonstrate relevant work experience.

Work Experience (Recommended but not mandatory)

It is recommended that learners have:

At least 6–12 months of work experience, preferably in an operational or customer-facing environment; and/or

Current responsibilities involving team coordination, shift leadership, supervision, task allocation, or workflow monitoring.

Language Requirement

Since delivery and assessment are conducted in English, applicants should demonstrate English proficiency.

Digital Competence Requirement

As the programme is delivered online via Zoom, learners must be able to:
  • Use Zoom (audio, video, chat)
  • Access digital learning materials
  • Submit assessments electronically

Learners must also have access to a stable internet connection and a laptop/PC (recommended) or tablet with webcam and microphone.
Method of Assessment

Assessment for the Award in Performance Supervision and Management is designed to be inclusive, fair, and aligned with the intended learning outcomes, while reflecting the applied nature of supervisory practice.

The programme is assessed through three components:

1. Quiz – 20%

An objective knowledge check consisting of multiple-choice, matching, and ordering questions. The quiz assesses the understanding of supervisory roles, leadership principles, communication methods, performance management fundamentals, and conflict resolution techniques.

2. Written Assignment – 50%

A structured written assignment (1,000 – 1,500 words) requiring learners to demonstrate deeper understanding and practical application of supervisory tools, including delegation, coaching and feedback models, managing underperformance, and supervisory decision-making.

3. Case Study Discussion – 30%

A tutor-moderated discussion based on a workplace supervisory scenario. Learners analyse the situation, identify root causes, propose appropriate solutions, and justify their decisions using supervisory frameworks.

Pass Mark and Grading

Minimum overall pass mark: 50%

Grading scale:

85–100%: Distinction
70–84%: Merit
50–69%: Pass
0–49%: Fail

Learners who fail a component may resit or resubmit once, within the specified timeframe.
